OCEAN AMBASSADOR
Claire Dufour
When and why did you start Diving?
I grew up in the Var, with my feet in the Mediterranean Sea from a very young age. First I did a lot of swimming because I was lucky enough to have a lifeguard dad who introduced me to the water very quickly. I've always loved spending time in the water with a mask on, observing shallow waters while holding my breath. I then discovered the discipline of freediving at the Nice sports university when I was 18, with Claude Chapuis and Delphine Marleux, incredible people thanks to whom my passion for the sea only grew and grew and be confirmed.
Why apnea?
For me it's a discipline that requires very little equipment and that allows me to link well-being and passion. The element and the life that we find there is something very important to me, it really feeds me.
What is your spirit fish? Why?
I think I have a lot of favorite species..but I'm going to choose two that fascinate me a lot. The first is the Flabelline (purple) with its incredible colors. What I love about her beyond her beauty is that she's not easy to find if you don't look carefully.
Then I love the striped dolphin, it's also the one I observe most often, but the encounter is always magical for me. It represents freedom in its purest form.
What do you enjoy most about diving?
I like the fact of being in contact with water, in a calm world that gives a feeling of well-being. The sea harbors an incredible life that we would not suspect from the surface. I like freediving more than any other discipline because it requires taking the time and reconnecting with yourself and with nature. This is my own vision and this is what I want to convey. Exploring and marveling is very important to me.
Favorite piece of Aqualung Equipment ?
My favorite piece of Aqualung is the freeflex wetsuit, it is so pleasant to wear.
How do you approach non-divers to get them excited about learning to dive?
I like to transmit my passion, I do it with children from 6 to 12 years old for several years within the school of the sea. It is important that they learn to protect the seas and oceans and for that it is important that they discover the environment and the
life it shelters there. I like to say that we are light in the water and invite you to discover the wealth of placs with little depth before going to enjoy the sensations of the big blue
Dream dive: where and with who (alive or not)?
My dream would be to dive every day in different places with different particularities, during a sailing trip, accompanied by specialists to learn something new every day and to approach certain species.
Diving skill you are working to improve?
I am working to improve the quality of my teaching.I am a freediving instructor and I reflect on the best way to teach and transmit by raising awareness of the environment and its protection. I am also working on improving my own freediving abilities and exploring even more.
What steps are you taking to improve the health of our Océans? Any advice for others who want to help?
I transmit a lot to children and I believe that it is very important to do so from an early age. We sometimes say that we only protect what we know, I don't know if it's true for everyone, but I think it's important to raise awareness of things by making people discover them and giving the right example.
In my opinion it is good to do your part every day, pick up a piece of waste, go diving and think about taking a bag for the waste, creating automatisms.
I believe it is important to realize that our behavior as consumers is very important and that we can already express a lot through the way we consume. Nobody is perfect, but if everyone participates and changes things on a daily basis, it counts.
Any Hidden Talents?
I did several years as a lifeguard at sea and it's something that I liked a lot more, I was then a trainer, I would have liked to continue doing lifesaving and teaching it. I believe that I have always liked helping people, today I am a Somatopath, it is, to put it simply, gentle and cranial osteopathy. I have one footin sport and the other in therapy, for me these are two areas that complement each other and I feel at home in both. I like the wellness approach in sport, whether in freediving or the rest. I also have a sports
license..
